Diabetic Superfoods. Avocados.

What makes a food “super”?  Superfoods is a term used to described nutrient-packed foods that may have more health benefits than other foods.

When it comes to diabetes, eating the right foods can help keep glucose levels in check.  There are many foods rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber that can be added to the daily diet.  Some of these include non-starchy vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

The American Diabetes Association has identified 10 superfoods that are high in nutrition but with low glycemic index.  Below are a few “Superfoods” for diabetes that can play a role in healthy diets:

  • Nuts
  • Beans
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Strawberries
  • Dark Green Leafy Vegetables
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Fish
  • Whole Grains
  • Fat-free Dairy products

Certain foods contain powerful nutrients that can help control blood sugar, regulate appetite and protect your heart, which are especially important when dealing with diabetes.  Incorporating superfoods into the daily diet can help manage and reduce the risk for diabetes-related health complications.
